We are an artisan brewery located 30 miles northeast of San Francisco in Concord, CA. Our brewery lies at the confluence of the mighty Sacramento river and majestic Mt. Diablo. Our name comes from the Black Diamond (coal) Mines, 8 miles east of the brewery. Here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, nearly 4 million tons of “black diamonds” were removed from the local hills. The vast network of underground tunnels remain and the historic grounds are now part of the East Bay Regional Park District .
The mining town residents came from all over the world, but to a large extent, from Wales. Their lives were characterized by hard work and long hours. They were strong, sturdy folk and may not have realized the magnitude of role they played in the growth of America. They built a railroad to the Sacramento River. Sent coal down the river. Coal was the petroleum of the 19th century, fueling the Gold Rush, changing the west forever.
Occasional celebrations were important to help sustain the dedicated miners, and beer became a favored beverage.
This spirit of hard work and celebration of life lies near the core of our philosophy.
